Momo, ya?
By special request from my CB, I will blog about new places that I try for food. Not because I'm any sort of authority when it comes to food (hey, I'm a glutton, hardly a gourmet), but because, in his words, "it gives (me) something to blog about."
Place: Momoya Japanese Restaurant
Address: 16 Jalan Pari Burong, Picardy Garden
Err, where?: It's near Simpang Bedok. Towards the fire station.
Tel: 6245 3303
URL: www.momoya.com.sg (but doesn't seem to be active....)
Generally, it's a place of extremes. Small and cozy-ish, it offers ala carte buffet (SGD$30/adult dinner) and some "fusion" dishes like a "Japanese style chicken cutlet".
We didn't try the buffet, but there seemed to be quite a few seafoody stuff on offer. Mom had the sashimi and the feedback was that it was pretty good and fresh, although it could be colder. Dad had some pork belly thing which was well received too. I had some pork curry rice thing. The pork was not bad - good bite and crisp - but the rice! URGH. Definitely NOT Japanese rice. Crunchy and icky. The weird thing was the soft shell crab mat roll's rice was ok (no, I didn't eat that). Maybe it was a crowded night and they ran out of their usual rice. I can only hope.
BUT....I would go back there again because I place great importance on service and the staff there were very good. It was a busy night and they were clearly rushing here and there, but were always incredibly pleasant, attentive, and polite. Even though they were harried, one of them even still took the time to apologise for taking so long to top up our green tea (it wasn't long at all, and we didn't ask for a top up.)
Seems like a good alternative to prata and such at Simpang Bedok. Quality of food probably can't compare to Megumi (if CB wants, I can write about that), but I'll need to try some other dishes first before I can make that assessment. But from what I've tasted thus far, it's certainly more than worth its affordable pricing.
