Work has a bigger bearing on life than you think
Consider. If you’re all roses and sunshine at work, love your work, whistle a happy tune while banging away at your keyboard day in, day out, chances are you’ll be whistling that same happy tune when you clock out of the office. It’s just a carrying over of the good feeling. Friends, family, even strangers would less likely to be irritating, your relationships both in and out of the office move smoother, and you’re generally a happier person.
The opposite rings true too, of course.
If you’re spending 8 – 10 miserable hours getting unreasonable requests, being pestered by irritating colleagues and, in a ode to andrea, being reminded you’re not looking at the “big picture” by a snotty, wet-nosed child who would probably break down and run crying to mommy the moment a major pitch arrives, how can you be expected to be all happy the moment you leave the office?
True, events in our lives do add a positive or negative spin on our moods, outlook on life and relationships and such, but seriously, I think your working environ plays a huge ass major role in how you perceive life, love and living.
See me win a pitch and I’m elated for the next week or so. Not even idiotic people can get me mad. (And for the record, I’ve only won one pitch in 2 years. Most of the new accounts come from pallying up and referrals and such.)
Now, see me just after or during a bad work week and even the most innocent remarks can set me off and drive me up the wall. Not a good way to live life, but it’s a lot harder than it sounds for us all to “leave what happens in the office, in the office.”
And no, not just me, but I’ve seen how friends are happier when they’re doing great at work and in opposite when work isn’t going so great.
I dunno. What do you think?
